Personal History Jacob resented the Starfleet life as a child, and being the son of a Captain made it worst with the level of attention it brought on him. At 16 he returned to Earth to live with his mother, who was currently working at a medical clinic in Kansas City. At 19 he entered law enforcement in a civilian agency.

He enjoyed the stability and routine of the city and was successful as a police officer, rising to a position as a street crime detective by 25. However, when he met Laura, a Starfleet personnel clerk at Starfleet Academy, he was convinced to move west and settle down. They were wed after only 10 months of dating.

Based on his civilian experience and education he was able to enter as a Petty Officer Third Class, and worked in the investigations section for the academy, mostly conducting security clearance and background investigations on potential cadets, or those about to graduate and fully commission.

At 28 He was promoted to Petty Officer Second Class, and also was notified he would be accepted for training at the Academy, which he unfortunately had to turn down when he found out that Laura was expecting their first child, and he was unwilling to put his career above his family and endure the rigors of year 1 with a pregnant wife, and then a newborn.

Professionally as a Second Class, Jacob was given the position of Physical Security NCOIC over the academy grounds, and began informally tutoring cadets who were on the security pipeline.

At 31 He was promoted to Petty Officer First Class and took over as the Night Shift Operations NCOIC for overseeing all enlisted security operations from 1800-0600 on academy grounds. When Lieutenant Tomal was transferred to the fleet, Jake got the opportunity to start giving lectures to the Senior Class Security and Tactical Officers one day a week focusing on investigative techniques and evidence handling.

In 2392 Laura and Anna were returning from a trip to visit her family for a getaway on Risa when their transport ship disappeared en route back to the Sol System. All hands and passengers were listed as missing on the first of July 2392.

After the 2392 Chief Petty Officer board passed him over for advancement, Jake realized that his career would stagnate due to a lack of fleet experience. This coupled with the grief of his recent loss led to his request to be transferred to a fleet position.
